This photo of me was taken in 2014 when I won first place in the Humorous Speech Contest for my Toastmasters International district.
As you can see here, I am all smiles as it was truly one of the happiest days of my life. However…
What you DON’T see is all that happened behind the scenes to get to this unforgettable moment!
The many nights of writing and re-writing…
Deciding what content to keep and what to cut so that I wouldn’t go over time and be disqualified…
Practicing the speech in front of MULTIPLE groups to get a variety of feedback…
Changing the ending three times throughout stages of the contest because nothing felt quite “right”…
Practicing the speech in front of a big mirror in a studio the night before the contest, to see how my body language and words aligned…
Mentally preparing myself (read: calming my nerves) before each audience leading up to the district contest…
Wondering if this speech was ever “good” enough to win…
Once I finally made it to the district after winning three prior rounds, I had to compete against seven other amazing speakers to capture first place. No easy feat!!
Why am I telling you this??
Because so many people see the glory of an achievement, but not all the grit that went into it.
Whether your desire is to dazzle in a speech contest, deliver compelling presentations for work or church, or simply to present without feeling like your heart will jump into your throat – mastering the must-have fundamentals of public speaking is the first step. That’s the work, or grit, that has to be put in first.
My NEW Slay the Stage! interactive coaching program will break down the foundational elements of excellent public speaking over the course of 6 sessions, so that you start off on the right foot on your speaking journey!
BEGINS SEPTEMBER 8, 2021 (6 Sessions via Zoom video) | 6:30pm EST/ 3:30pm Pacific

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
