If you’ve ever looked out into your audience and noticed confusing looks on their faces – it can feel unsettling to you as a speaker! You’re wondering why they look that way.
There are a host of reasons, but here are three major ones:
Your speech has no real structure and is going all over the place. There’s no logical flow they can follow. It’s hard for people to process what you’re saying when there’s no order.
Your body language and HOW you’re saying the words are not matching the words coming out of your mouth. There is clearly no congruency between all three and this is confusing to your audience.
Their level of knowledge on your topic is low or basic. If you’re discussing this topic on an expert level, they will quickly get lost and tune out. This is why it’s so important to know how much THEY know when you’re preparing!

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
